Book as Medium: Holding/Withholding Text

January 20 through March 5, 2010
Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery
University of California, Santa Cruz.

In the current climate approaches to the book often go beyond that of a traditional vessel for the word. In such books the medium evokes response from an audience that is no longer simply viewer or reader. Through thoughtful or tactile engagement, the book tackles questions about the essence of art: what is form? What is language? What can image evoke? What beauty surfaces? What agency arises?
